Reflection:Why worry over the spilt water and what is stopping us from living our dream?

By Ling-Ling Shih, Copyright © 2009-2012

Today, to my dismay, I found that my sprinkler was still left on in my back yard at 10:00 a.m. since  7:00 p.m. last night.  Evidently, I had left it on for 15 hours! I began to worry about how much water I have wasted and how it would erode the foundation of my house. I fretted for a good 20 minutes, then I realized what I have done to myself: Literally speaking, why am I fretting over the spilt water?  Why am I wasting all this good energy on something I have no control over? For the goodness’s sake!  I realize we sometimes waste our time in things we shouldn’t have, especially on things that have already happened and that we can’t do anything about.

This led me to think about deeper issues in our life. What do we have control over our live? We do have a certain degree of freedom over what we want to pursue in life: the direction we want it to go, a career we want to pursue that would get us excited to wake up every morning. What is keeping you from pursuing something you always dream of? The answer is Worries and Concerns. This big WC  (yes, it needs to be flushed into the toilet) is what keeps us from living the life we want to have.  But you know what–Life is too short.  If we are not doing what we love, when? My ex-husband’s best friend just died when flying his own small airplane. He has just turned only 50 years old! (Click here for the news of this incident)  His life was cut short by more than one-third by this unexpected accident; however, he died at least doing something he loved.

There are so many passages in the bible that teach us not to waste our energy and time in worrying. I think God would like us to go after what he puts in our hearts and use the gifts and talents he has given us. What has he called us to do? Listen to it carefully. Follow that inner calling.  There is no reason to put our dreams on hold.  Yes, we do need to figure out a way to pay the daily bills–We cannot give up everything for our dream if we are going to lose our shirts and starve.  But neither should we let the concerns about the distant future stop us from pursuing what we are passionate about. I admire those who have done everything they could to support their dreams in life and never veered away from it. I heard and read many  inspirational stories of such people who have excelled in living their dreams.

Here are my favorite bible verses that teach me to place my faith in Him:

Philippians 4:6

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” (Audio reading in English)

6 Yīngdāng yī wú guàlǜ , zhǐyào fán shì jiè zhe dǎogào , qíqiú , hé gǎnxiè , jiāng nǐmen suǒ yào de gàosu shén.  (Audio reading in Chinese)

Matthew 6:34

34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Audio reading in English)

Suǒyǐ búyào wèi míngtiān yōulǜ . yīnwei míngtiān zì yǒu míntiān de yōulǜ . yī tiān de nán chu yī tiān dāng jiù gòu le . (Audio reading in Chinese)

Poster on Matthew 6:34

“I will give all worries to you, God. Amen! (我将一切忧虑交给你) I am now trying to heed more the call of my inner yearnings and pray earnestly that what I am pursuing now is what God intends for me.

I don’t Worry about Tomorrow

Chinese Gospel Music: I Don’t Worry about Tomorrow

歌词Lyrics with Translation:

I remember when I was little,

I didn’t know what is sad

As I get older (With the increase of age)

More worries also follow along.

So many people are busy pursuing

Without peace and joy,

More worry can’t change anything

You see the birds in the sky,

Happily flying without a care,

You see the flowers in the field,

So beautiful and fragrant.

The loving heavenly Father feeds them,

They don’t need to worry

We should also be like them.

Put  all the burden upon the Lord

I do not worry about tomorrow

Even God  knows we are not good,

He still cares for me.

He heals my wounds,

He deplores my weaknesses

I know who holds tomorrow.

I don’t worry about tomorrow.
