Our Daily Bread 每日箴言: 喝主的水永远不渴John 4: 13 -14 渴(Part III)

By Ling-Ling Shih, Copyright © 2009-2012

I reread John Chapter 4 and imagine myself to be the Samaritan woman:

I came to draw the water and saw a Jew. This stranger asked me to give him a drink. I was surprised why this Jewish guy asked me for a drink.  For as far as I can remember, Jews and Samaritans avoided each other like a plague. I asked him why he was asking a drink from a Samaritan? ” I almost blurted out, “Don’t you know I am a Samaritan,” before he answered me. His response took me by surprise: “If you know God’s gift and who it is that asked you for a drink you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”

Who is this guy?  He did not talk like anybody I know.  Is he some kind of lunatic? Who, in the world, has ever claimed to have “living water”? What is this living water” he is talking about?!  I confronted him: “You have nothing to draw with. Where are you getting this living water? Are you bigger than our forefather, Jacob, who had given us this well from which we now draw our water?”

This is his out-of-ordinary response: “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

I did not completely grasp what he said to me, but  if I can drink some kind of water and never feel thirsty again, I want it. I asked him to “give me this water so that I won’t be thirsty again and have to keep coming [back] to draw water.”

I had no idea at the time he was referring to different kinds of thirst we have experienced in life–the thirst (yearnings, cravings, and longings) we all have harbored in our hearts, such as the thirst for affirmation, love, and happiness, the sort of things we can never get enough.  And there are also something we thirst for that cannot even be named (we don’t know exactly what we want, but we feel the angst). Have you ever felt an emptiness inside, which you feel helpless to fill no matter how hard you try?

When we are hungry, we eat until we feel full; however, our spiritual needs are hard to fill unless we are plugged in to the right source.

Now reflecting on what Jesus said, “the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life,” I realized what an immense gift I have received from him! Now I can live to give the testimony of his gift:

He has become a spring of water welling up in me.

When I confess my sins and feel contrite, he forgives me.

When I am scared, he calms my fears and gives me strength.

When I am worried, he assures me that it will be o.k.

When I feel I did not get the love I deserve, he let me know that I am loved.

When I am discouraged, he picks me up and gives me hope.

When I am sad, he comforts me.

When I grieve, he also grieves with me.

When I start to doubt myself, he affirms me.

When I need advice, he consults me.

When I am tempted, he empowers me to turn them away.

When I am lost, he shows me the way.

When I am weak, he becomes my strength.

He has become a spring of water welling up in me.

Even though I still feel uncertain about what comes after this life, I believe in the promise he has made to us.

I perfectly understand where King David and all other Christian brothers and sisters drew their courage and confidence:

Psalm 23:4

New International Version (NIV)

Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

诗篇 23:4

Chinese Union Version Modern Punctuation (Simplified) (CUVMPS)

我虽然行过死荫的幽谷,也不怕遭害,因为你与我同在,你的杖、你的竿都安慰我。

詩篇 23:4

Chinese Union Version Modern Punctuation (Traditional) (CUVMPT)

我雖然行過死蔭的幽谷,也不怕遭害,因為你與我同在,你的杖、你的竿都安慰我。

诗篇 23:4

Chinese Contemporary Bible (CCB)

我纵使走过死亡的幽谷,也不怕遭害,因为你与我同在,你的杖和竿带给我安慰。

Jesus said that if you know God’s gift and who he is, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.  Some people do not even believe that God exists.  I think to write off God’s existence right off the bat is as silly as to accept there is one without even getting to know Him. Every one has to get on his or her own Pilgrimage to find out for themselves.

Now let us wrap up this Chinese lesson on John 4:  13-14 by learning verse 14.
