每日箴言Our Daily Bread:

Galatians 5: 22 The Fruit of the Spirit 圣灵所结的果子

经文:加拉太书 5: 22-23

Scripture:Galatian 5:22-23

As I read through my Monday bible study material, I found one question particularly helpful to my personal growth: “How would you like to be remembered when people think of you?”  I’d like to keep this question in mind. It helps me to be conscious of how I should live my life. No one likes to be thought of as a negative person. Not only can negative people have negative influences on the lives of other people, they can pull themselves down by becoming someone whom they don’t wish to become. I don’t know about you, but when I find myself behaving negatively, I tend to feel frustrated with and disappointed at myself.

There are certain people in our lives that conjure more positive feelings and energy than others when we think of them. I am blessed with many people in my life who demonstrate various admirable qualities. While I appreciate different people for different positive qualities they have, I hope to become less judgmental of other people for what I perceive as their shortcomings. Since I am fallible and imperfect like the rest, why should I expect others to be perfect?  We can pray to God to help each one of us to grow in the areas we need to grow.

I notice that things I appreciate the most in others are listed in Galatian 5:22-23. Don’t we all wish that people will witness “love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” in us? As these verses say, these are the fruit of the Spirit.

The analogy of the vine and branches illustrates how our relationship with God can shape our attitude, character, behavior, and interaction with others; apart from Him we won’t be as loving, joyful, peaceful, kind, good, faithful, gentle, self-disciplined as God expects us to be. We won’t bear much fruit on our own; we need to graft onto Jesus Christ to bear the good fruit of the spirit. In John 15: 5-7, Jesus said:

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

We may all come with different innate personality traits and temperaments, but  if we are united with our heavenly Father through Jesus Christ, we can all bear the spiritual gifts of love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. We won’t bear much fruit over night, as branches require constant and continuous nourishment from the vine to survive, to grow, and bear fruit.

From my own experience, I know how easy it is to drift away from God and how hard to remain in Him. What should we do in order to remain steadfast in our faith? We ought to give this question a very serious thought.

Faith comes from the hearing of the word. Hearing his word through individual devotion, good sermons, group bible study, prayers helps us remain in Him. The indwelling of the Holy Spirit will nurture our spirit and help us yield good fruit that nurtures others.

Now let us learn Galatian 5: 22-23 in both Chinese and English. Ready?

19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit
