诗篇Psalm 1: 2-3…like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season…像一棵树,栽在溪水旁,按时候结果子…

Psalm 1 New International Version (NIV)

Psalm 1

Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
    whatever they do prospers.

Not so the wicked!
    They are like chaff
    that the wind blows away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

诗篇 1 Chinese Union Version Modern Punctuation (Simplified) (CUVMPS)

Psalms 1 :The Blessed man

Gospel Music: Psalm 1 (In English)

PSALM 1

Psa 1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.
Psa 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
Psa 1:3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
Psa 1:4 The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.
Psa 1:5 Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
Psa 1:6 For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

Reflection 感想:

Another year has passed. A new year has arrived. I have new year resolutions, but I am afraid to promise myself what I will do this year.  Instead of telling myself I will do this or that, I can only say to myself: Try to do what I am resolved to do this new year, even if sometimes I can’t keep them up.  If I do slack off someday, I will get back the next day. I don’t want to set myself up for failure, but if I encourage myself to never give up on my resolutions and make the best efforts to keep them up, they become doable.

The following is not a new year resolution, but more a list of things that will help me be the person I would like to be.

  • Have the right focus in life. Meditate on God’s word every day.
  • Take care of myself. Be kind to myself. Allow myself to get enough sleep. Exercise regularly. Eat well.
  • Be kind to others. Find opportunities to show kindness to others.
  • Don’t harbor any grudges against anyone.
  • Let bygone be bygone. Focus on the here and now.
  • Add values to other people’s lives through my work.
  • Build up myself and others.
  • Be a good steward of my time and other’s.
  • Smile more and make those around you smile.
  • Be genuine. Don’t be a hypocrite. Do and say everything from your heart.
  • Love. Be a loving mother, loving daughter, loving sister, loving friend, loving teacher… (I will end the list with this bible verse:1 Corinthians 13:13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.)

I know I need to work out the specifics to make any plan workable, but these are the general principles I want to uphold.

Happy New Year to all!

May God bless you!

____________________

I wrote the above reflection the other day. I am laughing at myself. I always made such a useless list. I don’t know why I bothered to make them. I went hiking in the rain today. I was chatting with another hiker. I asked her if she still made any new-year resolution. She jokingly said that “this year I am going to be meaner.”  I found that amusing, since I have never heard anyone make such a new-year resolution–and it was so different from the ones I have just made. I said that it probably won’t be as hard to keep as the ones I have made. For one thing, it is a lot easier to keep one resolution instead of 10. It is also probably easier to be meaner than nicer. She said that she is too nice sometimes, and she needs to tough it up a bit. Maybe she was hurt badly and needs to get meaner with someone. Perhaps she is in the middle of a divorce and she needs to stand up for herself. Anyway, her resolution seems to be a lot more realistic and achievable than mine.

I don’t know why I always have such an urge to come up with a list of “what we should do.” Don’t I know as soon as I made them, I am already starting to violate some of them? St. Paul knew well our propensity to sin and said, “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do” (Romans 7: 15). He said again, “For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do–this I keep on doing” (Romans 7: 19). If we have resolved to do any good, how can we be sure we do the good we want to do?
