What is “Learn Chinese thru the Bible (用圣经学中文 )” about?

Why am I writing this blog?

This blog offers you free multi-media materials for Chinese language learning.  It is useful for anyone who is seeking an alternative approach and content to acquiring Mandarin Chinese language. You will learn bible verses and gospel songs in both English and Chinese. I also share with you my personal reflection on verses and life, but don’t worry–I will write my reflection in English, so you will be able to understand.

My mission is to share God’s word and to help you find guidance, wisdom, and strength in his words.

I have taught the Chinese language in college for at least a decade. The materials used in college are useful; however, I thought to myself, why don’t I create teaching materials that are not only useful but also spiritually enriching? The Bible provides meaningful learning materials for language learning.  I enjoy Bible reading and it is personally rewarding to share Bible verses with you while helping you learn Chinese. Developing this website has been a rewarding experience for me.  It has helped me to be more resourceful and improve my bilingual skills.  I also hope this endeavor will help us to meditate more on God’s words and find their applications to our daily lives. I hope you will also find this Chinese Learning blog useful for language learning and spiritual reward.

Do you need some Chinese language background for reading this blog?

I wrote this blog particularly for adult and young adult learners who seek meaningful spiritual content for advancing their Chinese language skills. It would be great if you have a rudimentary knowledge of the  Chinese language or have taken at least one semester of Chinese in high school or college. However, I try to include all the vocabulary (including the most basic) in each lesson, so those who don’t have any background in the Chinese language may also benefit from this blog. Each vocabulary list contains all the words in the Bible verse. My blog can benefit learners at various levels.  More advanced learners will be challenged by the extra internet resources provided in each lesson, while the beginner’s needs are taken into consideration when I prepare for each lesson.

So, the answer is “no.” You do not need to have any Chinese language background to use this blog. Each learner can gauge their own ability, learn at their own pace, and take away what they can absorb from my website.

What will you find in this blog?

From Oct. 6, 2013, each post will contain a ppt language lesson  on a short verse from the bible as well as Youtube video(s) related to the song.  Sometimes I will add my own reflection on the verse.  I will use the following versions in my teaching.

  • English Version (NIV)
  • Traditional Chinese (Union version 和合本)or more modern Chinese versions
  • Simplified Chinese
  • Pinyin parallel transcript

This website will offer you god-centered resources for Chinese learning. In these lessons you won’t learn about how to order Chinese food in the restaurant, how to book a hotel, how to ask about what people like to do on weekends, how to talk about the weather, etc. You will, instead, have a unique language learning experience that is also soul inspiring. We will learn about Jesus, his life and his teachings, as we carefully and diligently study bible verses in Chinese.

“All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training  in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (Timothy 3: 16). If I may, I would say that it is also good for language teaching, and I don’t think God would oppose to the idea.

Psalm 1: 2-3 also says, blessed is the one whose “delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.  He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither.  Whatever he does prospers.”

God has revealed simple yet profound truth to all of us through different versions of translation, in a living language understandable by people of all nations, ages and different social backgrounds.  Therefore, the language we will learn through bible verses are applicable to daily living!!

Believe it or not (Yes, it takes a leap of faith to believe it), you can learn to speak Chinese and be inspired/transformed by God’s wisdom at the same time!!

Please don’t hesitate to give me comments and suggestions. I would love to hear from you!

In Christ,

Ling-Ling Shih 施玲玲

  1. Grandma has friends who have translated some of her Bible Lessons into Chinese. I hope they are helpful. You will find them here:
    http://www.mygrandmatime.com/3019-2/chinese/

  2. I’m amazed, I have to admit. Seldom do I encounter a blog that’s both equally educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you have hit the
nail on the head. The problem is something which not enough folks are speaking intelligently
about. I’m very happy I found this during my search for something concerning this.

  3. Cool site…..:-)

  4. Be strong my sister in the Lord,
You have been blessed to share the words of chinese and english using the holy book the b=Bible. I walk as only a man with my strength comes from Jesus. Lately I’ve been very lonely, today I was blessed again your video touch me more then you will ever understand. Listening to your voice bring a lot of inter comfort, I hope you are able to continue, if any thing I can do to help don’t hesitate to let me know. God be with you.

  5. Dear Lisa,

I found your site last night as I was taking a break from my study of Chinese. I have been working on Chinese intensively for the past year. I find the language challenging but very attractive. My background is in biblical studies, so I was delighted to see you not only helping us on the biblical text but also giving other sample sentences and even model prayers. I would love to see you continue some of these lessons. You teach well and introduce good and useful words and concepts.

    • Thank you so much for your encouragement. I will put continuing with my lessons in the list of my new-year resolutions. I read a bit on your website. You are so well published! I am looking forward to learning more about your writing.

Keep up with your Chinese and I will try to keep up with my Spanish.

  6. 您好。I’m an American with a year and half of Mandarin. I came across your website and became very interested. I have been a Christian for 10 years and God has led me to be involved in the lives of Chinese.I continually want to tell them about 耶稣, but have not come across too many biblical approaches on the internet where I can both study the language and the Word at the same time. I noticed that you started but then stopped blogging. I am very interested in learning more and growing spiritually. Please continue what you’re doing. It is a major blessing!!! I pray that God continues to work in your life and that you continue to press on with what you’re doing here. Thank you so much for this website.

    Sincerely,

    欧友强 (Patrick)

    • Hi Patrick,

Thank you for encouraging me to continue with this website. I will. I have not given up on this website. My life is just so full. Actually I am thinking about creating lessons from the beginning of the New Testament and have the chance someday to go over the entire New Testament! That is what I pray to have the time to do. Pray that God will help me get this starting again. The school is coming to an end and I will teach less next semester. I would like to learn how to use Camtasia to create lessons here. Let us continue to have the eagerness to tell people about Jesus!

  7. At last! Lisa, I’m glad that you initiated the idea. I just found this link via google when typing: easy bible verse to learn chinese pinyin. I look forward to learn more about your site. I like the motivation you gave about Dream. Act. And Realize.

  8. I have been searching for a site like yours for a few years. Thank God I have now found it. I will ask God to help me, and hopefully I will be able to minister in Mandarin in the shortest possible time. I am English speaking, knows very little about Mandarin but am surrounded by Mandarin speaking people – all my neighbours, friends, etc.

  9. 施老师, 您好

I really appreciate your initiative. I have a similar problem which is being very enthusiastic learner of Chinese, however by being a difficult language I was finding it difficult to conciliate my daily worship and study of the Word with my Chinese learning objectives. Sad but true.

So your initiative is a gift to help me in something that is concerning me too much.

If you need a volunteer to add the captions to your videos, count on me. I´d at least give it a try, if you teach me. Feel free to contact me on my private email informed in this form.

    愿耶稣祝福你,

    Fernando

    • Hi Fernando,

Sorry for the late reply :). Thank you for volunteering your time to put the caption for me. I think I am going to learn how to use camtasia to create lessons here. Camtasia will allow me to create instructional videos effectively.

I hope we will all learn how to find time doing things we are passionate about. I pray for God to find time to share his words with others.

  10. I can’t understand how I can add your posts to my news reader. your instructions are helpful I want to read your articles.

    • Thanks for your response. I need to figure out how to add the plugin so people can use the function of RSS. In the meantime, you can subscribe to my videos through Youtube.

    • Hi,

Sorry for the belated reply. I am glad you find my instructions helpful. If you have a problem with subscription via this blog, please go to Youtube and subscribe through my channel: llshih. Then whenever a new video comes out, you may be informed of my new entry. And from my new video, it comes with a weblink back to my blog.

  11. heya fabulous little website you got right here :) I apply the exact same design template on my own blog although for whichever odd reasons it appears to load more efficiently on this website although your own carries much more content material. Have you been implementing any kind of plugins or widgets that quicken it up? If you could quite possibly reveal the widgets so that I would be able to use them in my personal internet site so twilight new moon followers could watch twilight breaking dawn online trailers and films more easily I would be ever so pleased – many thanks ahead of time :)

    • Thanks for your nice comment. I don’t remember using any kind of plugins or widgets. If I did, I did them without even realizing it. Which specific features in my website would you like to have in your own website? Maybe by being more specific, I can share what I know. I wish I could be more of help to you. Ling-Ling

  12. Just wanted to say you have a great site! Thanks for posting

  13. Just wanted to say I really like your site and will definitely be back!

    • Hello, Harvey,

Thank you for your willingness to take the time to write a review on my website. Just make sure to send me your review. Thanks,

      Sincerely,

  15. Would it be ok if I link to your website, from my website? I’m needing to collect as many snippets of information as I am able.

  16. HI , 施玲玲 , I’m not sure if this is your Chinese name , but I copy and pasted it in faith :) . Yes I wrote about 50 songs. But as you probably already know , my level of skill is not mature yet . Just like anything in life . The more put in the more others can pull out of what God has put in you. For example (gifts) . I’ve been searching for a way to learn mandarin through the bible for a long time . I’ve also been writing songs for a long time. But it wasn’t until I saw tears roll down people’s cheeks while I sang , that there are a lot of people like us who need to hear the Word of God . Your love for His Word is a gift. Also your ability to express it through lessons and reflections is a gift. And time will tell of the lives that were changed for eternity , because something small expressed something big.

    • Keep up the good work! As you indicate, we reap what we sow. Very true. As you, I also feel that I need to improve my skill(s). Isn’t it wonderful that God placed the desire in our hearts to pursue certain things in life?

Here is a Chinese adage–"天生我才必有用"(We are all endowed with a gift). Although I am not certain if writing is my natural gift, I sure have the passion to pursue a career as a researcher, writer, translator, and educator.

May God give all of us the strength and resolve to pursue an interest (either as a career or as a hobby) we are passionate about! What to lose if we fail at our attempts? Just put our trust in Him; He will open another path for us to follow if one path does not pan out. If we care to live a life we are passionate about, we’ve got to listen to God’s calling and follow the yearning He has planted deep within us. The desire in us is there for a reason.

Share with everyone my “mantra” in life:

Dream. Act. And realize. If not. Try again, again, and again. And realize. If not. Follow another dream. Act. And realize. Just never give up on pursuing what you are called to do… You are living the life you are destined for even before you turn your dream into reality. The process of trying/doing is what matters.

  17. Thanks for this important article. As an enthusiastic Buddhist, recreation specialist along with Yoga lover, I actually love the balance of work you have put into this post. Found it through Yahoo so I really expect, some others will find it as beneficial as I do.

    • Thanks for your feedback. Even though I believe in the redemption of Christ and anchor my religious faith in Christianity, I still desire to learn more about other religious and spiritual traditions. I believe the understanding of world religions/different philosophical traditions deepen our own faith and enrich our spiritual lives.

I am not in a position to proselytize nor am I here to preach, because my knowledge in the Bible is limited and I am far from being an exemplary Christian; I am here to reflect and share with others what I can glean from selected Bible verses. I am here as a student who desires to gain more understanding of the Word, while helping others to advance their Chinese language skills.

  18. Hi Ling-Ling Shih , I’m your first subscriber Chris , I just read about how your conversion carried you through difficulties in life . If you scroll down to the 3’rd song “walk on the water” you can hear my similar situation.

    http://lighthousesurrey.wordpress.com/

This Song came out of a dream I had. I was standing alone on a boat that was sinking. And I thought oh no! Now what am I going to do? Then a voice spoke and said “Why don’t you just walk on the water”. Then I woke up and knew it was Jesus. His voice gave me faith to come out of the darkest period of my life. Even when it was impossible. I Just stepped out onto the impossible through His Word. When awake to God all things are possible.

Were learning more than mandarin through your website.

    • Did you create the song and the lyric? If yes, God has blessed you with great gifts. Thanks for sharing.

  19. Dear 施玲玲

I think it’s such a great thing you have done with this blog. I have long wanted to study Chinese through the Bible, but I didn’t have anyone to help me with it. This blog will really help me. I’m so glad you have found God through Jesus.

    Yours truly,

    Christian

    • Dear Christian:

Thank you for your positive feedback. Emails like this really encourage me to continue developing this blog. I have been quite busy with my work lately and will probably have to wait until I am done teaching this semester before I can make more lessons with this blog. Thanks once again for your encouraging comment.

If anyone has any recommendation for a software that can help me ease my task in inserting the subtitle into the video, please let me know.

      Ling-Ling
